Seriously? Iceland??

Life 'n' That

Feeling like a holiday? Well, as far as value for money** to some destinations, your timing couldn’t be better.

There are loads of great travel deals available at the moment, so take advantage of them for some R&R.

Online travel company Expedia.com.au, in conjunction with foreign exchange specialist HiFX, recently produced the Expedia Foreign Exchange Index, which reveals the top 10 destinations where Australians can get the best value for money while travelling.

The top 10 countries to visit based on the index are:

  1. Iceland – stunning with beautiful wilderness areas
  2. Poland – amazing history and architecture
  3. Fiji – relaxing with loads of pristine beaches
  4. Mexico – rich and vibrant with a colourful history
  5. Russia – a shopper’s dream with plenty of high fashion stores
  6. Sweden – full of character and quaint villages
  7. Romania – dotted with fantastic castles
  8. Hungary – has 22 wine regions
  9. Norway – features 24 hours of daylight in the summer
  10. Argentina – known for tango, music and delicious barbeques.

The Expedia Foreign Exchange Index is updated on an annual basis.

** Traditionally, Iceland has been a very expensive place to visit from anywhere…let alone Australia.  It’s hard to find a place on earth further away from Australia than Iceland…  And yet, here it is, on top of a list of value for money destinations.

We’ve always wanted to go…but time & cash are currently fairly significant obstacles.

Oh, and wanting to visit some other people and places first :)

Surprised Slovenia isn't on there. But yeah, Iceland?! My friend did a geography field trip there, and not only was it never dark (making sleep dificult) it was also crazy expensive. I've been to Sweden and know that's crazy expensive too. As is Norway…

I don't think I believe Expedia.

Apparently, for reasons unknown, getting to the Scandinavian countries is ridiculously cheap for us right now when the airfares are included. No idea why.

Whereas getting to Slovenia and most other former eastern bloc nations is expensive when the airfares are added in. Russia (and Poland and Romania) appear to be exceptions.

But still, weird weird weird.

I'm surprised the US isn't in the list at the moment to be honest…cheap airfares, a great exchange rate…

I'm not even sure if I've ever seen a picture of Iceland. You know, the lack of mula sure gets in the way of all lot of stuff!

really?!?! Iceland. I didnt know they had a big tourism market up…errrr down, or where ever its location is from me here in the States.

If I had a choice of Iceland or Australia… I think I'd be picking Australia, and or New Zealand. But that's just me

Iceland is up from everywhere…unless you're in northern Canada or Greenland…when it's "across there" or something.

New Zealand is a stunningly beautiful country. Australia's pretty good too of course :)

I expect the fact that Iceland was the first country to go BANKRUPT in the financial crisis may have something to do with the list. Iceland's National Bank was heavily exposed in the Sup-Prime mortgage and CDO debt debacle and now do not have a brass razoo – so they are chasing ours! ;-)

Best visit quick before China buys it up as an icebox – or a place to put all those unwanted pesky Uighurs, Tibetans and Mongolians.

With an Annual inflation rate of 300 million percent i'm surprised Zimbabwe is not also high on the list of tourist destinations as one Aussie dollar is now able to buy you a mid to large sized Zimbabwean Government Department – or a lifetime's supply of sunscreen and coconuts – whichever you'd find more useful?? :-)
