I Owned A Record Company

God, Just For Fun, Life 'n' That

Well, kinda.

I made some independent CDs and sold quite a few of them (this goes back to the previous century), and still have the registered business name with the appropriate Australian authorities. And my Australian Business Number (which will mean nothing to the non-Australians) still has dg4G Records listed as a trading name.

But I didn’t hold on to the domain names that I had registered at the time.  I just didn’t have enough foresight to imagine me using them again.  And in the days before deregulation of domain name ownership in Australia, owning and not using them was a little expensive.

Out of curiosity, I just checked out the domain for my former “record company” site.

Why don’t you do the same thing.  Right now.

dg4g.com

I don’t think I’d want that domain now even if I could have it.

While I still use dg4G as my Twitter name (not least because it’s very short, freeing up more of those valuable 140 characters to use for important things in retweets and @replies, like words), it also makes an appearance in a few of my social media profiles…but not all of them. Or sometimes it’s there, but in an adulterated format, like “dg4G…” which is my Skype name, or “dg4God” which is my delicious.com name and also one of my multiple gmail accounts.

I used to own davidgoodwin.com.au, and could do so again, but why? .au domains are a bit naff.  However, at no time in the last 15 years have I ever seen davidgoodwin.com available for registration or purchase. Until now.

So…should I buy it? How much do you think it’s worth? Is it just a vanity URL, or protection of my future web presence?

Tell me your thoughts … but what I really want to ask is…would Jesus want to own Jesus.com, or JesusChrist.com, or Messiah.com, or Saviour.com (or…the list is almost endless) if his time on earth as a human was happening right now?

Sure, it’s idle speculation…but I think we should take the WWJD question a little more seriously than we sometimes do. It’s easy to be flippant about something that gets thrown around carelessly like WWJD often is, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a worthwhile question.

What do you think?

do it. doooooooo it. i have crystalrenaud.com for no other reason than to protect my name and to make sure it is never in the hands of the wrong person (and for any future prospects that may arise). if you go there, it just takes you to my blog. i bought it when i was like 17 or something though. now if i could only get pinkhairedgirl.com from the lesbian who sews her own socks.

Oh and I doubt Jesus would even need a domain. He was Jesus. He made himself quite known without self-promotion and spectacle. He was King of using others to make himself known.

I would say….What's in a name?? Your name?? Is your identity locked up in those few letters? Do those two words sum up who you are? If fame is the goal, absolutely go for it. I am more of a fan of domain names that tell me what the site is about…ie. ragamuffinsoul, shapingthespace, whatsthislifefor….Those domains would make me, as a total stranger to you, interested in seeing what was in the content. I wouldn't read TobyKeathley.com…..I mean, who am I? If I were famous, still, who am I?
Having said that, the goal for me is to reach the lost through His Word and a glimpse into my life to show the lost that Christians don't just play dead and knock on doors….we have a good time too. I realize that not everyone has the same goal.
Long story short: I'll never own TobyKeathley.com, but I don't necessarily find fault in those who think differently. :-)

I've put in an offer. We'll see what happens :)

"He was King of using others to make himself known."

Very true.

So, in that case, do you think John the Baptist might have wanted to get his hands on those domains?

I like long stories Toby (and that didn't qualify, just so ya know…you've seen the length of some of my 'brief' responses on Tam's blog – haha)

I agree with you on the blog principle. Not that I don't read plenty of blogs where the URL is the owner's name, but I like it when it gives a little insight into what it's all about.

However, as a personal identity card, I'm thinking it could be worth it. After all, there's a kajillion David Goodwin's out there, and I'd quite like to be the one shaping the davidgoodwin.com space. Not for fame and fortune (though bring it on if that's the way God has ordained for me to make an impact in His Kingdom), just so that when people search that name, they find something honouring God.

Side note: the number of people with my name who are in ministry is fascinating…to me…

Kinda like Carlos & many others have done with their realnameURL sites. A web based ID card … but which leads you to other places that do tell you more of what I'm about.

I, of course, left out the obvious idea of pointing your name domain to another one. I cannot disagree with any of the above :D .

is there not an engrish transration page of dg4g.com? Why on earth would you have a domain name in characters you never use yourself???

As for Jesus Blogging or purchasing His Domain name(s)?….hmmmm??

(This is before he's been crucified – right? Not the Second Coming we're gabbing about?)

i think it would be a matter for His Father to determine since He (J) always does His Will.

Personally i don't think either of them would be that interested since such a bunch of stuck-up tossers use the internet to communicate messages to other stuck up tossers who own laptops, blackberry's and i-phones – no? ;-)

i think they'd still be 'keeping it REAL' and getting down and dirty in da 'hood – or going to the 'top' and telling those in power how it is going to be.

I don't think you can do either very effectively via e-mail or yourdomainname.com

Ok – i have just shot myself in the foot, haven't i? ;-)

I use my name at the request of our ministry – my blog is connected to the church's site. Soooo – I started blogging at the request of one of my pastors, otherwise, I would have never thought about it! ha ha

It has proven to be invaluable to me in connecting with other leaders across the world! Because they think I am a decent writer (got them fooled!), they have invited me to review, write and comment on any number of ministry related items. For this I am very thankful because our ministry is located in central Ohio – small city – low income! The ability to connect takes me places the Lord probably will never take me physically.

I think God probably enjoys our efforts to connect with one another and honors our interest and efforts to spread the gospel through any means we feeble humans can think of. So, although I use my name – I have no high position, or high education, or anything on this earth that would give me a reason to think anyone would give a rip that it's me – Lori! ha ha WHO???

Don't know if Jesus would have any use for bloggin, etc., but I know He says to GO – and if helps my GO I think He'd be for it!

You've got some really great points in there Lori. I might have to think about how I use this newly acquired name a bit more carefully!

Sweet japanese record company!
Just kidding. I actually thought at one point I would retire a rocker…actually almost joined a Christian band that hit it semi big (sanctus real).

Anyway, I am of the persuasion that a url is noteworthy via it's content. That is; you can work shapingthespace just like you can davidgoodwin.com. But, I bet Jesus would prefer jesuschrist.com over satan.com. All that to say, besides extreme cases, rarely does the url mean more to the public than it does to the owner.

That's funny you say Sanctus Real almost made it semi big. They are more popular down here than a lot of Christian bands that have made it "big big". You missed out on popularity in a market smaller than California – haha :)

I totally agree on the URL thing. I've got it now, which means I can use it to shape the web space, rather than all the other David Goodwin's out there using it … even if they are in ministry like a lot seem to be.
