My Heritage

Music

I was a choir boy.

Much of the international travel I have had the privilege of taking part in across Europe and the USA is because I was a choir boy.

And the choirs were good. We won some ARIA Awards for classical recordings. That’s our equivalent of the Grammys.

If you know what I sound like, you can clearly hear me in these (very short) songs. In fact, even if you don’t know what I sound like, you can still hear me clearly…you just won’t know.

Both my sisters were in this choir too. Good times. So long ago. Eek.

The Australian Voices

Australian Up-Country Song : Percy Grainger – by the time this was written, Percy was living in the USA. He was almost a pop star in his day (late 19th century), and was missing home. For reasons unknown, he decided wordless was the way to go. I’m very glad about that.

Autumn Song : Peter Sculthorpe – one of my favourite contemporary classical choral songs, beautifully simple and evocative, particularly if you’ve ever visited Tasmania, Peter’s home state.

I’ve got plenty more, so if you’re interested, let me know in the comments and I’ll do another choral heritage post soon.

And if you’re feeling particularly bizarre, try playing both MP3 files at once. Yeah.

Love me some Percy Grainger. I was a band boy (not in a boy band) all through school. I’m college, our director was madly infatuated with Grainger, for good reason, he wrote amazing stuff!

Oh. I realized too, I now have 3 Aussie readers! You probably are not acquainted with Kimmy, but she is from NSW and is taking my Hebrew classes. :)

I loved listening to both songs but the second song is just so beautiful…. amazing.

and the part about the pop star in his day cracked me up!

(your twitter widget made me laugh…. just so you know….hm. maybe I am easily amused?)

Percy's a legend.

And re the band boy / boy band thing … we had some guys who played the range of brass instruments in the main school band just at the time NKOTB were getting big (I really am old), and they decided to become a brass band version. It was hilarious hearing You Got It (The Right Stuff) being brassbanded. :D

Thanks Annie. It all feels like another lifetime…but it's one of the many influences that has shaped who I am musically (and spiritually, for the sacred choirs I was part of), and I realised I'd never posted anything about that…in my looongg 5 months of blogging history – haha

If that's the same Kimmy who posted those amazing wave shots…then we have now become acquainted – haha :)

Autumn Song is such a beautiful song – I never ever get tired of it.

As I was doing the post, I was thinking about celebrity composers in the days before records, etc, etc … and realised it's the equivalent of today's pop star stuff.

Was it the particular tweet that was up when you posted (which would have been the Nepalese food one…mmmmmmmm), or just the widget in particular? When I found it, I loved that it was right colours for my current them, and also that it was a little funkier than a lot of the ones you see around the interwebs.

Anytime. Good causes for Christ should be publicly acknowledged

it is an interesting way to think… I like it! Sometimes we view life as so different from those times when it really wasn't (well except for technology haha) but people are just people…always.

I like that it is a tweet bubble (or thought bubble) …it is interesting…and birdless haha…most people that have their tweets on their blog have that bird somewhere! It is unique….I like unique :)

It is an interesting way to think. I've often considered the way Jesus would have been seen as a bit of a pop star by those who couldn't see who He really was – you know, the latest fad. We have indeed always been people.

And I will admit as much as I love my widget and that it's not commonly used…I miss Diane's SpaceTwitter birdie. When she gets a moment, she'll be redoing him with a transparent background so that he can live on any blog theme – seeing I keep changing them so often :$

The choir boys come out of the woodwork :)

Multiple choirs…yes. I was in 7 at one point, but was in 5 for most of high school. This one was when I was at university, and was one of 3 choirs I was in then…

Touring schedules were mad. On our first Europe tour, we did 37 concerts in 20 cities across 7 countries in 31 days. Which in Europe is pretty much the same as you guys did across the US. That was for a high school choir that gave up part of our summer holidays to do it. Loony, but wouldn't have changed a thing. The ABC down here made a documentary about it, back in the day.

Praying you guys can one day all worship lead together – clinging to that miracle that you've not yet seen, but keep hoping for.

David,
These are phenomenal! Really.
I love them both, but that first one stuck with me.
There is a 'mystic' sound to it. I grew up in pentecostal churches with electric guitar and drums for praise and worship. Don't get me wrong, it's good stuff…but when I hear this serene choir music, I really 'feel' like it's an offering to God.

I would like it if you posted some more songs!

Thanks Nate. I grew up exposed to so many different styles of music, that I currently miss having a frequent classical 'outlet' in my life. I get to the odd concert every now and then, but not often enough.

I'll post some more of the other songs in the coming weeks.

I wish I had more recordings of our sacred music – but we mainly recorded music which had been rarely recorded before, rather than rehashing readily available stuff. But now all I have is the memory. I'm getting all nostalgic…but in a good way. :D

ahh yes.. I too am a choir boy. I was in several choirs growing up. Some kids played multiple sports.. I did multiple choirs. Then when I graduated high school I was in a traveling choir that did 35 states in 33 days. It was crazy..

and now do I do any of it. Ummm not really. The Mrs and I used to be worship leaders at a church until things happened with Gavin.. and now it seems but an ancient memory.

Oh Dave! Thanks for this little journey down memory lane – loved it. I am missing a choral outlet in my life. There is lots of lovely classical with my teaching and listening – always Classic FM. Ess loved Perfect Day so she must need some of your stuff in her life :) I might just have to link to your blog to share my choral heritage too now that you have uploaded those most beautiful songs.

Itching to sing together again. Can you tokbox that??

Love you

I SO miss singing with you & Lis like we used to – all the time…

And it might be a little hard to Tokbox a choir some singing, but only in terms of audio quality :)

Still, we gotta do it – the kids would love it!

Have you got Bluebird Dave? Just heard it on ABC CLassic FM this morning – it wasn't our choir but I'd love to hear ours again if you do another post and upload.

I know I have a recording of John Rutter's choir singing Bluebird…but I'm not sure I have us doing Bluebird except for in the documentary opening (poor sound quality).

Did it ever get on a CD? I can't remember. Will have to look :)
