God is the Source

God

At church last night I tweeted from the service for the very first time.  I’m not sure if I’ll do it again.

On the one hand, it is a really good way of sharing a key point (and it got re-tweeted a few times, so I’m thinking others tweeps thought it worthwhile too).

On the other hand, it’s hard to make sure I only tweet the point and don’t get caught up in a cool twittersation.  That’s me lacking discipline though, so I should probably stick with it and just learn the art of anti-distraction ;)

So, the thing I tweeted that my Pastor said in last night’s service, now presented in more than 140 characters, was:

God is the source of our supply.  People (or the world) are channels.  If a channel closes, you need to remember that the source is still open.  Don’t get distracted by the channels opening and closing, focus on the source.

That’s fairly paraphrased but if I waited and listened back to the service (like Diane does many times a day as she edits it for TV), then it would never make it on here.

It’s really REALLY easy to lose focus of what’s important, particularly at the moment as the world slips into the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.  But, and using another pastorism from Harbourside, we have a financial Christ : so focus on Him for your supply, not where you’ve become accustomed to getting it from.

Really easy to type a few words about that…it’s a lot harder to actually do it.

So tell me – how do you feel about twittering during church?
or how do you feel about the source/channel analogy?
Go on then, comment on both if you must…

wow, that is such wisdom.

I debated the tweeting thing internally this morning…when you are sitting in a dark audience it is hard to take notes and something the pastor said was something I really needed to remember…luckily he repeated the phrase right at the end so I was able to go into the lobby and quickly jot it down :)

Did you all see that video where a church in WA encourages the tweeting during the service? I don't remember where I saw it but it was a news clip! I've tweeted a lot during the services, but it's when I'm sitting in 2 services and hiding in the sound booth where others can't see me. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but when I mentioned the tweeting church she told me no way and shook her head! I already twitter too much and I know I'm like you David and not disciplined enough to not get distracted.

What your pastor shared on totally goes with what was shared at our church this weekend and going with the mega $$$$ I mentioned awhile back. So that's super cool! When God closes a door it just means he has something better for us!

I usually take notes…and I was taking notes, but I decided to tweet this particular nugget. Glad I did too.

Still deciding if I'll go down the route of using my phone to take notes…I probably will…still undecided about tweeting the nuggets though… =/

I didn't see the news clip but I saw something, (maybe on Tony Morgan's blog) about encouraging church tweeting. I'd still be concerned about people getting into conversations rather than actually listening…but maybe it opens the door to a whole new style of teaching…hmmmm

That is super cool re the alignment of what's going on in our churches. The usual way of wording it with doors opening and closing for some reason I'd just never really associated with finances (more the classic "opportunity" stuff) quite like this particular bit of wisdom did. Funny how that works !

TONS of people at GCC tweet during service. There's probably 20 tweets each of the 5 services, not including all the employees. They use twitter to be connected w/ each other as well.

I tweet during services, but I just send & close. I sometimes take notes on my iphone's notepad & go back later to tweet the nuggets.

Not sure if I'll tweet at the new church. Probably take notes & tweet the nuggets later. OR isn't a large twitter savvy area. They prorably won't "get it"

It's going to be really interesting to see if Twitter catches on with anyone in our church very much.

Or if I visited a more 'western' church like Hillsong's main campus, to find out whether they have a greater proportion of tweeple.

Or now that Brian Houston, etc twitter, whether that encourages more members to do it too…

So many questions I have for myself…o.0

i twitter almost every week. but generally only during worship (or during the greeting) and not actually during the message. i sit pretty close-up with my mom (she likes sitting in like the 4th row) and i don't want my pastor getting a complex about me texting during his messages. BUT — i twittered like a mad-person during Catalyst. i actually did that because it was easier to text the good nuggets than having to write them down. AND — i went back later and i had all my notes all nicely timestamped. :)

oh and i totally agree about the source and channel thing. we are ultimately just His to channel whatever He wants through us. everything begins with Him and ends with Him. we are just lucky to be in the middle of it somewhere.

The timestamping and the ease with which I can search it all again is very appealing. I've definitely noticed there's a lot more tweeting going on at conferences than weekly services…still undecided if I'll tweet the weekly messages. More thought needed :)

though we need to be intentional too – make choices, not just "God, wherever You want me". John Bevere has some great stuff about this in Driven By Eternity…one of Diane's and my fave books/DVDs

I suspect both come down to – 'be not conformed of this World but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.' ( Rom 12:2 )

When faced with a 'closing down' renew your mind and seek the truth from the best 'available' source – don't get stuck to the 'old'… Hmmm i see a certain 'parallel' here…

On Another matter: Is a Cat B log a lesser version of a Cat A log?? ;-)

And surely i'm not the first person to ask if you and Tim are related – no? :-)

A parallel indeed :)

But onto the other matter/s:
(1) I prefer to think of a cat b log as being the next release to the cat a log (which are so last century, really). Kind of like alpha, then beta software releases. Either way, not yet perfected.
(2) You are, in fact, the first person to ask about Tim ! I've been asked about being related to a whole host of people, but never Tim. I can see the resemblance…but photography is a funny thing isn't it…
